Help me shut down a racist group on Facebook

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

There is a racist group of people on Facebook that I've been blogging about this week. I have finally had enough of them, and the time has come to turn my words into action. I hope you will help me shut them down.

Although their behavior is mostly offensive to the Cherokee people, their extremist views are an embarrassment to anyone who values the principle of equality.

I'm drafting a letter to the council of the Cherokee Nation which I will post later today.

Please help me shut down this racist group by reporting their page to Facebook. It only takes a few seconds - just visit the group's page and click the REPORT button:

My Letter to Facebook

I am requesting the removal of the Facebook group "I am a real Cherokee and can PROVE it" due to numerous violations of the Facebook Principles and the Facebook Rights and Responsibilities. They have now split into two groups on Facebook (one public and one private) so both groups should be shut down.

Section 3 Article 10 Violations: The group is discriminatory by basing their membership entirely on race. They are misleading because they suggest they represent the Cherokee Nation and they do not. The group posts hateful language with the intent to harm the reputation of the Cherokee people, which is not only malicious, but defamatory in nature.

Section 3 Article 6 Violations: The group is being used to intimidate, bully, and harass members of the Cherokee tribe.

Section 3 Article 7 Violations: Content posted within the group is hateful and demeaning with blatant racism.

Section 5 Article 8 Violations: By requiring users to provide documentation of their ancestry prior to joining the group, they are forcing users to post sensitive identification documents of not only the user, but of the user's entire family.

Facebook Principle 4 Violation: By using a user's race as sole criteria for joining the group they are breaking the Facebook principle of fundamental equality.

Thank you for making Facebook such a great site, but groups like these greatly diminish the enjoyment of your website.

Sincerely,

-- Gary Wright II
