To my dear friends - the end of DADT may be soon!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Later this week, I will (hopefully) finally be able to close a lingering chapter of my life when Congress votes on the repeal of the failed military policy of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

I opposed the policy when it was enacted in 1993. In 1996, I became a victim of the policy when I filed a complaint of sexual harassment and my command retaliated by discharging me from the Navy. I did nothing wrong, and my refusal to lie about it cost me a career in the military.

I am not alone. Over 13,500 skilled soldiers and sailors have been fired under this policy. All we wanted was a chance to serve the country that we love, yet we were denied the very freedoms that we were fighting to protect.

I want to take a minute to thank each of you for your unwavering support. It has been a 17 year battle, and although weary, I have never once thought about giving up this fight for equality.

Many of you have always been right by my side for almost two decades, and I wouldn't have made it without your constant words of encouragement.

I love each and every one of you, and I can't thank you enough for all of your support!

Best regards,
