My beef with the Echota Cherokees

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

I am not against any tribal members, but most of the tribe leaders have lost their way. How do we keep from "throwing the baby out with the bath water?"

I only know about my former tribe (Echota) and I am fighting hard to shut them down. Here is why: They told a lesbian she couldn't dance at the powwow. I understand that powwow is a family event and some dances may be considered inappropriate. Since I wasn't present for the discussion, I asked for the meeting notes which they failed to provide me. All I wanted was an explanation. Instead I get a message that said the tribe does not recognize gays and lesbians. Okay, that pissed me off. The last message was what sealed their fate: A clan leader basically said if you're not Christian, you are not a good Cherokee. This reminds me of the forced schooling when they told indians how to speak, how to dress, and how to worship. There is no excuse for that still happening in 2011. I gave the Echota leaders a chance to resign quietly, but they chose otherwise. I am not out to embarrass anyone and this is not the place to air dirty laundry. I have nothing against Christians but I be damned if anyone is going to tell me how to worship. If a tribe can not accept ALL people, they NEED to be disbanded. Again, my quarrel is with the leaders and not with the innocent members of the tribe.

Best regards,
