Junk Science and the Paranormal

I've been interested in the paranormal since I was a mere boy-child. The engineer in me wants to study and test every device that comes along - especially dealing with the paranormal.
A lot of the devices being sent to me for evaluation are based on ridiculous principles. What is the value of studying superstitions and junk technology? Because they both can sometimes inspire someone to create real and usable technology.
An example, which is not paranormal, is what I call "tornado snails." We've all seen the movies when someone puts their ear to the ground to see if horses are approaching. That simple method will soon be saving thousands of lives. With technology, we can say with great certainty what is happening inside of a storm. We can detect the signatures of a tornado, but unfortunately, RADAR can't tell us when it is actually on the ground. True, you can sometimes see clouds of debris flying through the air, but by then it is too late. The "snails" keep their ear to the ground. They sense all vibrations, but they are specifically listening for that roar and thump-thump-thump of debris hitting the ground. When the snails "hear" that distinct sound - we know it is for real and know for sure the twister has reached the ground. The whole design of the snails was inspired by putting an ear to the ground, which at first glance, seem totally unrelated.
Open your eyes and your minds to everything that surrounds you. If you are seeking inspiration, you will usually find it.
