What to say to a weary warrior?

Gary Wright II pays tribute to our veterans

I was at the veterans hospital today and met some troops coming home. The department that handles wheelchair parts also does the limb prosthetics. In the line ahead of me was an 18 year old whose legs had been blown off by an IED. What the fuck do you say to someone like that? It is so awkward. My legs are screwed up, but I lived a full life before they went out on me. Here is this kid in front of me whose whole future was ahead of him. Sure, he has a positive attitude and his life isn't over yet, but I still have to wonder about the life he might have lived without having to overcome such a catastrophic disability.

I couldn't think of anything to say, so we sat in silence. It seemed like forever, but I just sat there and tried to hold back my tears. When our number was finally called, my reaction just came out naturally. I looked him in the eyes and I gave him a quick salute. He returned the salute, and not a single word needed to be said between two weary warriors.

Best regards,
