What's wrong with Gary? (An Update)

Monday, September 10th, 2012

I'm so exhausted! I spent all morning at the VA in Huntsville, but they took good care of me. My resting heart rate hasn't been dropping below 120, but I just started some new medicine that is already dropping it back down to normal. Today I had a vasovagal syncope reaction, but luckily it happened while I was with the doctors.

There is an ion-channel myopathy disorder that is probably related to the malignant hyperthermia (MH) that runs in my family. The MH is a very rare condition that causes fatal reactions to anesthesia and other triggers. Without having been put under anesthesia, I've had seven surgeries on each foot, so that equals a total of fourteen individual surgeries. I don't want to have any more of them!

When I was around twelve, I had muscle contractures in both of my feet, so they had to cut and release the tendons in my toes in order for me to keep walking. For thirty years after my first surgeries, I lived more than most people could experience in a dozen lifetimes. I did everything I wanted to do, I saw everything I wanted to see, and all of my dreams eventually came true.

I always knew this day would eventually come, so I tried not to ever waste a single precious minute of my life. I won't even watch reruns on television! I'll probably have to roll around in my wheelchair from here on out, but I'm actually kind of okay with that...

My next goal is to find a house in Atlanta that is wheelchair accessible. I also need to move all my health care closer to ATL so I can have immediate access to all of my good doctors at Emory. My current home has steps in front and steps in back. Why must gravity constantly make me its bitch whenever I have to go up or down the stairs?

All of my studio equipment has been in long term storage, so it will really lift my spirits once I have a place to play my music. I'm going to downsize my guitar collection, since I can't stand up and hold most of mine. Anybody want to trade some of my guitars for a MIDI workstation keyboard? I'm using Hydrogen software for the drums, but I really need a good synth to finish the Struggler album.

I'm going to rest and recuperate this week because I have to go back to the VA on Friday. I'm so grateful for all of the support from my family and friends. I could ever make it through each day without your love and support! <3 <3 <3

Best regards,
