What are the Cherokees fighting for?

Uh oh, I need to reevaluate and refocus my efforts A few days ago, I asked for help coming up with a rebuttal to each of the citizenship issues raised by the federal tribes. That sparked a conversation that went something like this:
Q: "What is your ultimate goal for the unity project?"
GW: "For the Cherokee people to become united under one nation."
Q: "And then what?"
GW: "To become a self-sufficient society."
Q: "Has any other native nation ever became self-sufficient?"
GW: "None, that I know of..."
Q: "If I bought up all the land of northern Alabama and wanted it to become a sovereign nation, what are the chances the US government would allow it to exist?"
GW: "Pretty much zero."
Q: "What are the chances the US would ever allow a sovereign Cherokee nation?"
GW: "Pretty much zero."
Q: "There are over 500 federally-recognized Indian tribes. What are the chances of the US allowing over 500 new nations within its borders?"
GW: "Definitely zero."
Q: "So why are you guys fighting each other just for the right to board a sinking ship?"
GW: "Damn it! You got me on that one...."
It has been several days, and I still haven't thought of a good answer. There is a big difference between giving up and having done all that you can do. I never want to give up the hope for justice, but that conversation was one hell of a reality check for me. We haven't done all that we can do yet, but we are running out of options.
Where do we go from here? What should be our ultimate goal?
