Man circumsized daughter with a pair of scissors.
Thursday, October 26, 2006
Khalid Adem, an immigrant from Africa, circumcised his 2-year-old daughter with a pair of scissors. He could get 40 years in prison if convicted of aggravated battery and cruelty to children.
The man performed the procedure back in 2001, with a pair of scissors in an apartment in Duluth, Georgia. According to Adem, if the girl were not circumcised, "it will be a shame to the family." The family is from a culture in Ethiopia that practices female circumcision.
I have such mixed feelings about this story -- I think they have a right to preserve the culture of their people, and would not be the first religion to practice circumcisions. It's sad that the poor girl didn't have a choice about it. I am really horrified that the father did this with a pair of scissors. If it had to be done, it could have at least been done by doctors in a sterile environment.
