Domestic Partner Benefits in Athens / Clarke County GA
Monday, December 18, 2006
The Athens-Clarke County Commission voted 6 to 4 to begin offering health insurance to the domestic partners of unmarried Athens/Clarke County employees.
Athens/Clarke County is the 8th local government in Georgia to provide domestic partner benefits.
Commissioners Alice Kinman, Charles Carter, Elton Dodson, Kathy Hoard, Carl Jordan and David Lynn voted in favor of the proposal.
Commissioners Tom Chasteen, George Maxwell, States McCarter and Harry Sims voted against it.
Mayor Heidi Davison, who was easily re-elected in the run-off election, also supported the policy. Her opponent had attacked her support of the Domestic Partner benefits proposal as part of his election campaign.
Although I am not a Clarke county resident, I would like to thank the commissioners who voted in favor of the policy.
