Thank you Echota Cherokee - We had a very pleasant trip!
Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
We had a wonderful day visiting my tribe (Echota Cherokee of Alabama). Office Manager Janny Channy was so patient and helped us so much. My mother had lost all of our genealogy records when her computer crashed (and she didn't have a backup). With Janny's assistance, we were able to retrieve the original records from the tribal rolls. Without her help, this information would have been lost forever!
We had an excellent conversation with Janny about the tribe and the challenging issues the tribe faces in the future. Tribe Principal Chief Charlotte Hallmark (yes, women have always held very important leadership positions in the tribe) is out sick for a few weeks, so I did not have the pleasure of meeting her today. She is such a wise lady - maybe I can meet her on my next trip.
They really need office supplies and a bigger office space. I hope that I can get local businesses to sponsor the tribe and help gather the supplies that they need to continue their operations. None of the people working so hard for the tribe are paid for their time. They are all volunteers. Amazing!
Although I was unable to hike on the trails, we visited the log cabin and the outdoor classroom in the woods. On the trails there are educational signs that point out plant species and how the plant was used as medicine.
We ended the day with a big hug and promised to help the tribe in any way possible. A very good day!
