Cemetery Preservation Project Update

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Our cemetery preservation project will end this month with only two endangered sites remaining on the list. One cemetery is safe, but has an unsightly lot adjacent to it. We're moving that case over to the land repatriation list but with a low priority.

The final cemetery will also be added to the land repatriation list, but I'm uncertain which priority. There are confirmed graves in the middle of a farmer's field, but I've gotten mixed feedback on the damage assessment. One expert said, "They don't plow that deep so they'll remain safe." To me, it seems a little disrespectful. Do you think it should be made a low priority or should it be more urgent? If any resources are left in the Cemetery bucket, they will be assigned to the land repatriation project.

Finally, the next time I go to Huntsville I'm planning to stop by to see the new veteran's memorial. I won't be able to do any etchings, but if anyone has loved ones listed there let me know and I will be happy to take a picture for you....

Because of the turmoil in the region, the Cherokee / Egyptian culture exchange planned for 2012 is postponed indefinitely. When things settle down over there, we'll start organizing a new trip and everyone is invited!

Best regards,
